Why are switchblades illegal?

I find mine very handy, for opening. Is it because of the old movies, and books. For every knife could be dangerous, but I use mine as a tool, not a weapon. The person behind the tool can change it into a weapon. Also if I get my switchblades sharpened at a knife store, will I get arrested?
